Opportunity Scholarship and Special Needs Grants
On February 1, 2014, history will be made in North Carolina. This is the date when the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) will provide application information on its website, www.ncseaa.edu, so parents can apply for the new North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship Grants. The NCSEAA will begin awarding scholarship grants to parents on March 1, 2014. The NC General Assembly provided funding for approximately 2,500 students. However, if there is a large number of applicants, additional funds will be requested.
The new Children with Disabilities Scholarship Grant for special needs students also begins in 2014, and priority will be given to students who received a tax credit during the previous semester. Applications for the spring 2014 semester are currently available on the State Education Assistance Authority website (www.ncseaa.edu).
Typically, one of the best advertisements for our school is our satisfied parents. Since these grants are currently available only to parents whose children are currently enrolled in public schools looking to make the move to private education, it is important to let them know how to apply. Although I will announce this information to new families planning to enroll for the first time in Fall of 2014, we suggest that you tell your friends considering VCS to give us a call so we can give them the scholarship information. (We will post this link to our website as well.)
A website has been designed for parents to see if they qualify for the grant: www.schoolchoicenc.org. Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina (www.pefnc.org) is providing good information for prospective parents.
Private Piano Lessons
If you are interested in private piano lessons, please consider contacting Mrs. Hobbs, one of our piano teachers, at 213-6648. She gives lessons to students in grades 2-12.
Need Financial Aid for College? FAFSA Day is Saturday, February 22. Please look for a separate email about this upcoming event and if it applies to your family, let me encourage you to make your plans to attend.
BELKS Charity Day
In the next few weeks I will share with you some pertinent information about an upcoming event that will benefit our school and your pocket book! Keep your eyes peeled ladies….sorry men.
We have a school parent that is interested in doing some late-afternoon/evening and weekend babysitting for children of VCS families. If you are in need of these services, please contact Gail Welker at 336-314-1668. Thank you.
Before you know it, we are going to start the re-enrollment process for next fall. As in years past, we will have a brief meeting to discuss the upcoming year and distribute re-enrollment packets. We will schedule several meetings for the morning, afternoon and evening to hopefully accommodate all of our school families. A separate email will be sent today with that information. If you are not able to attend one of the scheduled meetings, you are welcomed to attend an open enrollment meeting with new families. However, please keep in mind we had some families that ended up on waiting lists because they did not come to a re-enrollment meeting. We cannot guarantee re-enrollment if you wait until open enrollment to attend a meeting. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.
Viking Night at Subway!
Viking Night was such a success that we are going to continue! Here are the dates for this semester: February 12, March 12, April 9 and May 14. VCS will receive a percentage of all sales from 5pm-9pm on these dates. Come out and help our school as well as getting a healthy meal!
As you are aware, we had to delay the opening of school this morning because of the possibility of icy roads. I placed a call on our SchoolCast system this morning alerting our school families about this delay. If you did not get a call around 6am this morning, please consider going to your SchoolCast account to make sure your contact numbers are current and correct.
Please keep in mind that if we close or delay school you will receive a call through our SchoolCast mass communication system. We also post that information on channels 2 and 8. If you do not get a call or see it posted, that means we are on a regular schedule. Since we do not run busses we can often open school when the public schools cannot. With that being said, when we have wintry weather and VCS is open but you do not feel comfortable driving to school or sending your students that drive, please don’t. We will ALWAYS forgive tardies and absences on bad weather days.
As part of our out-reach program, we would like to collect any unused Bibles you might have around your home. We will collect them at “C” Building. Thank you.
Europe Trip 2015
If you were not able to attend the meeting in October concerning the trip we are planning to London, Paris, Switzerland and Austria, it is not too late! Please stop by the office in “C” Building to pick up information. This is going to be a great trip and since it is almost two years out, it is very cost effective! Please give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions. Please note that when you register online, our tour number is 1432788JD. That is different from the label on the flier you may have gotten. Sorry about confusion. This is going to be an amazing trip!!!
Helping VCS While You Shop
If you shop at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Target or Lifeway, please consider linking your rewards card with our school. We get quarterly checks from them that go toward the Christmas Staff Appreciation Drive. Thank you for your consideration of this blessing to the teachers!

Lost & Found
Keep in mind that all lost items will be placed in “Lost & Found” in “A” and “C” buildings. Please check these weekly if you are missing anything. Please note that all of the unclaimed items will be donated to charity at the end of each month. If you will write your child’s name in all clothing items, we will make sure anything lost is returned to you.
Word from My Heart
Have you noticed how the attribute of commitment is waning in today’s society? So often if things are not progressing as planned or turning out as dreamed, people either give up or take an easier route? I really don’t think God wanted the creation of His own image to give up so easily. He wants us to make commitments and stick to them.
I heard a story some time back about three farm animals that were discussing breakfast. The cow was “mooooaning” about how difficult it was to be milked each day so the farmer could have milk, butter and cheese for his family. The chicken was “clucking” about how early she was awakened each morning by the farmer’s cold hand to retrieve her eggs. The pig stood there looking at them in astonishment. He then reminded them that their gifts to the farmer were an investment so they could be fed and cared for. “Bacon and sausage,” he lamented, “is a commitment!”
Let’s give our lives as a commitment to the things that are before us. God has a plan for us far beyond what we could ever hope for. Give Him your all in all you do.
