Make-Up Snow Days
Hasn’t this been quite the winter? I still have trees to clean up in my yard after last week’s ice storm! We have missed an unprecedented 6 days this year due to icy weather. Although we always build in extra days in anticipation of bad weather, we had no way of knowing we would have so many! In order to insure that we meet the NC Department of Education’s required academic days, we are altering our school calendar. We will reduce our Easter Break by one day to April 17-21 and extend the closing of school to 12 noon on Friday, May 23. Thankfully, these are very minor changes. However, we know that some families may have already scheduled vacations that will conflict with the extended dates. Please note that we will excuse any absences from school on April 22 and May 23 as long as we get note from you at least one week in advance of those dates. Thank you for your understanding.
PTF Family Fun Night
Due to the Ice Storm last week, the PTF Family Fun Night has been rescheduled for Friday, March 21! On Friday, March 21, VCS will host its 16th Annual “Pack Out the Gym” Family Fun Night! Please make your plans now to attend this fun-filled event. If you wish to purchase a spaghetti or hot dog dinner and have not let us know as of yet, please send in the bottom portion of the flier that was sent home. Additional fliers are available in the school offices. (If you do not have time to send in the order form, still come…we will have plenty!) Please give us a call if you have any questions.
Our last re-enrollment meeting for the school year, 2014-15 was Friday, February 28. If you were not able to attend one of the scheduled meetings, you are welcomed to attend an open enrollment meeting with new families. We cannot guarantee re-enrollment if you wait until open enrollment to return your re-enrollment forms. Please give those forms to Mrs. James in “C” building. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know. Open Enrollment begins March 13! After that date, enrollment is first come, first served basis.
With all that is being said in the news media about Insta-gram, Twitter, Facebook, Snap-chat, etc., we want to encourage our school parents to be extra vigilant in keeping close tabs on your child’s social media accounts. You can help to insure that your child’s account is guarded by making some secure settings adjustments and making sure your child does not allow anyone to “follow” them online. This will make it much more difficult for someone to “hack” in. Please remind your child that he/she is not allowed to use a phone at school from the time they arrive in the morning until after the 3:10 bell rings. The consequences for doing so is 5 demerits and the phone will be confiscated and held in the office until a parent can pick it up. As always, if you have any questions, please give us a call.
As we have done in the past, our Faith-In-Action community outreach program is going to help provide to families in our community that are in need, especially to those affected by the recent ice storm and subsequent power outages. During the month of March and April we will collect peanut butter, jelly, non-perishable microwavable meals, and grocery store gift cards in any amount to go to those in need. Please give your donation to your child’s teacher or to one of the school offices. Thank you.
I have a family that is interested in giving away an upright piano. All you have to do is pick it up! If you are interested, please let me know and I will give you their contact information.
If you will have a rising Junior or Senior for the fall of 2014 and are interested in having your child use eTextbooks, please let me know. Since we do not charge a book fee for the textbooks we currently use, you would be responsible for the cost of the eTextbooks your child will use as well supplying the tablet device. If you are interested, please email me. Thanks!
Please keep in mind that if we close or delay school you will receive a call through our SchoolCast mass communication system. We also post that information on channels 2 and 8. If you do not get a call or see it posted, that means we are on a regular schedule. We will ALWAYS forgive tardies and absences on bad weather days if you do not feel safe driving.
Europe Trip 2015
If you were not able to attend the meeting in October concerning the trip we are planning to London, Paris, Switzerland and Austria, it is not too late! Please stop by the office in “C” Building to pick up information. This is going to be a great trip and since it is almost two years out, it is very cost effective! Please give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions. This is going to be an amazing trip!!!
Helping VCS While You Shop
If you shop at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Target or Lifeway, please consider linking your rewards card with our school. We get quarterly checks from them that go toward the Christmas Staff Appreciation Drive. Thank you for your consideration of this blessing to the teachers!

Lost & Found
Please check weekly in “A” and “C” building if you are missing anything. All of the unclaimed items will be donated to charity at the end of each month. If you will write your child’s name in all clothing items, we will make sure anything lost is returned to you.
Viking Night at Subway!
Viking Night was such a success that we are going to continue! Here are the dates for this semester: TONIGHT, March 12, April 9 and May 14. VCS will receive a percentage of all sales from 5pm-9pm on these dates. Come out and help our school as well as getting a healthy meal!
Word from My Heart
I have run out of room this week so I will leave you with a quote. I will share more with you next week. “Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means you have decided to see beyond the imperfections.”
